Getting More Out of Your Health Insurance Policy
What do you really know about your health insurance plan? If you have one, have you really looked at the extras that come with the policy? If you don’t have one, and are shopping around, you should take a closer look. Many insurance companies have extras that can help you get more out our your policy.
Wellness Programs
Many policies have what they call wellness programs. The idea behind these programs is to encourage you to do things that will keep you well and healthy. Here’s a look at some of the things that such a program may offer.
Weight Loss Programs
Have some extra weight you need to get rid of? From Weight Watchers to Jenny Craig, your health insurance company may be willing to help you out a bit with some of the costs involved with trying to get that extra weight off and get your body back in the shape it needs to be in.
The reason health insurance companies are willing to put money into these types of programs is that it has been proven that obesity contributes to a number of ailments, and keeping you at a better weight may mean you will incur fewer doctors bills down the road. They look at this as a smart investment.
Gym Membership
Whether you are already in shape or could use a little help to get in shape, a gym membership is often a great way to take care of your body and keep it fine-tuned. Many health insurance policies will help you get into better shape by paying a part of your gym membership.
Again, health insurance companies know the healthier your body is the lower the chance that you will have health problems that will lead to time in the doctor’s office or hospital. For this reason health insurance companies encourage going to the gym. Some even go so far as to pay for part of it.
Stop Smoking Program
It is known that smoking leads to a number of health problems. This is why many health insurance companies charge customers extra if they are smokers, to counter those higher bills they are going to incur down the road. At the same time, they are willing to encourage those smokers who are willing to try and get it out of their system. Many health insurance companies are willing to pay a portion of your smoking cessation program to help you become healthier.

Destiny’s Belly
Where is your belly going, where has it been? I know that opener probably sounds like the title of an old Joyce Carol Oats story, but I can’t help but think about the obesity trends in the United States, and how many of us don’t realize the trouble we’re in.
The alarming trend hit me when I saw an interactive map at the Centers for Disease Control that tracked obesity as it increased across each of the states over the last 20 years. The dramatic increases can be seen in flashes from one state to the next until the majority of the country is covered with a reddish-orange hue, indicating that between 25-to-29 percent of adults have an Obese Body Mass Index—that’s the measure of body fat based on height and weight.
What’s really mind boggling about the growing obesity rate is that it’s based entirely on the adult population. There are no adolescents on this map…not yet. And that’s the real scary part, because you know kids everywhere have more sit-on-the-couch distractions than ever before. Couple that with the odds that many of their parents’ own bad eating habits will likely be absorbed by them, and you can’t help but wonder—what is the obesity rate going to be in another 40 years?
I can only imagine what the fad diets will be like then: “Lose 20 pounds while you play videogames!” Or, “Text message your way to a slimmer waistline and a more healthy you!” Geez, I make it sound almost as bad as the real diet plans already out there!
What can we take away from this? Adults need to be aware that their own weight loss plans can mutually benefit their loved-ones around them, especially kids. Show your children the right way to lose fat and inches on the waistline by including them in your own weight loss decisions, and I don’t mean inviting them to Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig meetings—you should already know that fad diets like that may not only be wrong for you, but are probably a bit overwhelming for children.
As always, your focus should be on maintaining a healthy weight, but remember that everyone is different. In the end, follow your gut, and you can’t go wrong…unless of course it takes you to the ice cream aisle! Stay positive and keep those weight loss numbers in the negative.
